Glamorgan opener Steve James completed an unbeaten triple century as the Welshmen continued to pile on the agony for Sussex at Colwyn Bay. Glamorgan, put in to bat by Sussex captain Chris Adams, eventually declared at a massive 718 for 3, the highest score in the club’s history. In reply Sussex had reached 112 for 5 at the close.Earlier James, 32, who played in two Test Matches for England in 1998, put on 374 for Glamorgan’s first wicket with Aussie Matthew Elliot before Elliot was dismissed for 177 in 234 balls. James was unbeaten on 309 at Glamorgan’s declaration.Elliott, who lost his Australian Cricket Board contract prior to the 1999/2000 domestic season, eventually played on to paceman James Kirtley.The stand erased the previous Glamorgan record opening stand of 330between Alan Jones and Roy Fredericks against Northamptonshire atSwansea in 1972. It was Elliot’s fourth century and James’ third ofthe season. Elliot in the process became the first Glamorgan player tocross 1000 runs this season.
