In one Kirtleyover, not only did two Kent batsmen leave the field, both caught, but twoSussex fielders also had to depart – one with a broken nose and eye damage,and the other with an injured thumb. Jason Lewry collided with CarlHopkinson as he held on to a catch to dismiss Geraint Jones, and Lewry cameoff the worse with his nose being knocked out of place. And five ballslater, Tony Cottey attempted to hold on to a ferocious pull from Ed Smith atsquare leg, but only succeeded in severely injuring his thumb. Both werewhisked straight to hospital. Kent were missing their captain David Fulton,who also suffered a sickening blow to the eye – only this time from abowling machine. They needed 293 for victory, and while Greg Blewett andSmith were there, victory was in their sights.
